Meet Eric!

NAME: Eric Lake

WHAT DO YOU DO AT CAPTAINU?
My job is to make sure athletes get the most out of their CaptainU accounts. That may seem broad, but that’s because I have a broad set of responsibilities! I do everything from answering questions in the support inbox to creating tutorials, running 1-on-1 recruiting consultations, and providing the product development team with important feedback about what our athletes want & need to most effectively connect with coaches. I’m also gunning for top spot in the office foosball rankings, although I’m not sure I’ll pass Avi, our CEO.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT CAPTAINU?
I just passed my two-year anniversary! I’ve gotten to see the CaptainU set of tools and team grow a ton in my time so far and am so excited to see how many more athletes we can help in the future.

DID YOU PLAY SPORTS IN COLLEGE?
I did… sort of! I was a top wrestler in my county in Southern California in high school and did go through the whole recruiting process of writing letters & sending my highlights to coaches across the country. I went on a few official recruiting trips and ultimately found a great fit at the University of Oregon. I had a mean bout with mononucleosis at the start of my freshman season, and by the time I was well enough to practice again, the school had announced they were dropping the program. I did compete at a fairly high level non-collegiately and am incredibly thankful for my time on the wrestling mat.

TALK ABOUT YOUR EDUCATION & BACKGROUND:
I attended the University of Oregon and am a proud Duck through & through. I studied Business with a focus in Marketing & took my first job in commercial printing as a new-media consultant in 2010. I stayed in print for 3 years and rounded out my time working as a customer service representative for a custom book printing company. I joined CaptainU as a support agent in 2013 and now manage the support experience for our athletes.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF CAPTAINU?
I like to stay busy! Outside of CaptainU, you can find me playing tunes as the resident DJ of a fun dance sport here in Denver, acting as captain & 1st baseman of my kickball team, and playing rounds of disc golf. I’m also an avid traveler and am looking forward to my next big trip to Northern Europe this summer!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR CAPTAINU ATHLETES?
First and foremost, fill out your profile! Before you do anything else, stop— have you added every piece of info, every photo, and every video clip you can to your profile? No? Okay go do that, then come back to me. Okay, I’m glad we got that out of the way! Beyond that, I’d just recommend being proactive and making contact happen rather than waiting to be found. If you’re interested in a school, shoot them a note and introduce yourself! Don’t wait until you’ve hit that new PR, got that better test score, and make a new team, start the conversation now! Hitting an exciting milestone will just be a great excuse to follow up again!

ANY LAST THOUGHTS?
Treat the recruiting process like you do your sport. Think of your favorite athletes— did they get there by happenstance, or did they work for it? Of course they worked for it! Deciding you want to play sports in college isn’t going to get you there, you have to be diligent & put the time in to create relationships with coaches & find the perfect fit for you.
